Private driver, package tour or self-drive? How to get around Sri Lanka
Three ways to get around the island, compared by someone who drives for a living — with the trade-offs, the downsides and what to ask for in a written quote.

Almost every guest asks me the same thing before they book: is a private driver actually worth it, or should we take a package tour or hire a car ourselves? I drive for a living, so read this with that in mind — but I have also watched enough travellers make the wrong choice to know when a driver is not the answer.
The three options, in one table
| Private driver | Package tour | Self-drive | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How to compare cost | Ask for Ceylon Drives' current day rate and the full route total | Ask for the total for your party, named hotels and included activities | Ask for the rental total, fuel, insurance terms and required driving documents |
| Who it suits | Travellers who want their own route and a vehicle confirmed for their group and luggage | Travellers who want a pre-booked programme | Confident drivers who enjoy planning and driving themselves |
| Flexibility | Ask how route changes and waiting are handled | Check the operator's change policy | You can change your route within the rental terms |
| Local help | Ask who will drive and help plan the route | Ask whether a guide is included on each day | You plan stops, bookings and timing yourself |
| Planning effort | Share your priorities and approve the route | Choose a programme and check its inclusions | Arrange the vehicle, route and stops yourself |
| Costs to check | Confirm transport inclusions and separate tickets or stays | Check optional activities and room supplements | Check fuel, insurance terms and required documents |
| Best for | First visits, families, the classic loop, the North and East | Solo travellers who want company, very short trips | Repeat visitors on the coast, long stays in one region |
Compare written quotes for the same dates, party size, route and hotel standard. Confirm every inclusion and payment term before deciding.
What a private driver actually gives you
The obvious part is the car: air-conditioned, your group only, from the airport to the last hotel. The less obvious part is the day itself. Sigiriya before nine, when the stone is cool and the stairs are quiet. The train from Nanu Oya to Ella with your bags already in the car at the other end. A safari jeep booked the night before so you are at the gate at dawn, not queuing at eleven. Those timings are the difference between the trip people rave about and the one they merely finish.
You also get a route built around your interests rather than a brochure’s. Ten days can lean towards temples, wildlife, beaches or the quieter North and East, and it can change on the road when a place surprises you. Ceylon Drives lists the driver and vehicle rate, inclusions and any separate travel services in a written quote, so you can compare the full cost with a package for the same trip.
The honest downsides of a driver
You are choosing a person, so ask who will actually drive, what happens if your route changes and whether any shopping stops are expected. Read recent reviews, check the written inclusions and ask how waiting or a day without driving affects the quote. Those details matter more than a low headline rate.
The other honest point: a driver does not shrink the island. Sri Lanka looks small on the map, but hill roads run at 30 km/h and town traffic is slow. The classic 10-day loop is about 1,000 km, and the best drivers will tell you when a plan has too many pins. If yours never does, be suspicious.
When a package tour is the better choice
If you are travelling alone and want company, a small-group tour is often cheaper per person than a private car and gives you people to eat dinner with. If you have four or five days and want zero decisions, a fixed programme works. And if you want a licensed site guide inside every monument — the archaeology of Polonnaruwa, the history of the Temple of the Tooth — a tour will include one; a driver arranges a site guide separately where you want one.
Check three things before you book a package: whether the hotels are named or just “3-star or similar”, how many “optional” excursions are charged on the day, and how many people are in the vehicle. A twelve-seat minibus is a very different holiday from a car.
Self-drive: what nobody tells you until you arrive
Foreign licences are not valid on their own in Sri Lanka. You need either an International Driving Permit endorsed locally or a temporary recognition permit, both arranged through the Automobile Association of Ceylon in Colombo or the Department of Motor Traffic — the rental company can usually organise it, but it takes time and paperwork at the start of the trip. Driving is on the left, buses overtake on blind bends, tuk-tuks fill every gap, and the hill roads between Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella are slow, narrow and unlit at night.
It can be a wonderful way to travel if you are used to that kind of driving, especially for a long stay on the south coast where distances are short. For a first visit doing the full loop, most people who try it tell me they spent the holiday concentrating on the road instead of looking out of the window — which is exactly the job I am for.
A quick way to decide
Two or more people, first visit, the classic loop or the North and East: a private driver. One person on a short trip who wants company: a small-group tour. A confident driver staying weeks in one region: self-drive. If you are between two of those, send me your dates and the places you care about — I will tell you what fits, and if a package or a rental suits you better I will say so.
